BPC-157: An Overview of the Research Literature

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide — fifteen amino acids — derived from a protective protein naturally present in human gastric juice. It has become one of the most requested compounds in tissue-repair research, with a body of preclinical literature spanning three decades.
Origins and mechanism research
The parent protein was identified through its role in maintaining gastric-lining integrity. Research on the isolated 157 fragment has examined several proposed mechanisms, including upregulation of growth-factor receptors, modulation of the nitric-oxide system and promotion of angiogenesis — the formation of new blood vessels — in injured tissue models.
Research models
Published preclinical studies have examined BPC-157 in models of tendon-to-bone healing, transected muscle recovery, ligament injury, and gastrointestinal lesions including inflammatory-bowel models. It's important to note that the overwhelming majority of this literature is in animal models; controlled human data remains extremely limited, which is precisely why the compound remains a research chemical.
Practical laboratory notes
BPC-157 is notably stable compared with most peptides of its length — studies have documented stability in gastric-juice conditions. It reconstitutes readily in bacteriostatic water. Store lyophilised at -20°C.
