MOTS-c Research Guide: The Mitochondrial-Derived Peptide
By the APL Research Team · Updated
MOTS-c broke a biology rule: it is a 16-residue peptide encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene — a region long assumed to encode nothing — making it the flagship of an entirely new class, the mitochondrial-derived peptides.
The mechanism
Published models associate MOTS-c with AMPK-pathway activation — the cell's master energy sensor and the same pathway engaged by exercise and caloric restriction. Under metabolic stress it translocates to the nucleus and modulates gene expression directly: a mitochondria-to-nucleus messenger.
The research wave
Exercise-mimetic framing put MOTS-c at the centre of metabolic and ageing research; age-related decline in circulating levels added the geroscience angle. It pairs naturally with NAD+ and SS-31 in mitochondria-focused programs — our longevity category groups all three.
Handling and sourcing
Standard lyophilised protocol. We stock 10mg vials, ≥99% HPLC-verified with batch COA, express Australia-wide.
If you run a peptide business, or are building one, we wholesale Australian-sourced stock to trade buyers across Australia.
All compounds discussed are for in-vitro laboratory research only and are not for human or veterinary use.
