Peptide Storage and Stability: Protecting Your Research Investment

Peptides are fragile molecules. The difference between a compound that performs consistently in your assays and one that quietly degrades on a shelf comes down to four factors: temperature, light, moisture and mechanical stress.

Lyophilised storage

Freeze-dried peptides are dramatically more stable than solutions. At -20°C, protected from light and moisture, most lyophilised peptides remain within specification for two years or more. At room temperature, short periods (days to weeks, e.g. during shipping) cause negligible degradation for most sequences — which is why lyophilised transport is standard worldwide.

The enemies of stability

Moisture is the most underrated threat: repeated opening of a cold vial in humid air introduces condensation that hydrolyses peptide bonds over time. Let vials reach room temperature before opening. Light degrades tryptophan-, tyrosine- and methionine-containing sequences — store dark. And oxidation affects cysteine and methionine residues, which is why vials are sealed under inert conditions.

Reconstituted storage

Once in solution, the clock accelerates. Refrigerate at 2-8°C, never freeze-thaw repeatedly (ice crystals shear peptide chains), and observe the 28-day window when using bacteriostatic water. For longer programmes, reconstitute smaller vials as needed rather than one large vial held in solution.
